Soil, slabs and movement in Clyde VIC
Clyde sits on completely different ground to the western and northern growth corridors. Where those are Newer Volcanics basalt with highly reactive residual clay, the geotechnical study prepared for the Clyde Creek and Thompsons Road precinct structure plans maps this area as Baxter Sandstone and associated sedimentary units, with a dominant profile of silty sand or sandy silt over silty clay. That makes most of Clyde markedly less reactive than Tarneit or Melton South. The issue that replaces shrink-swell is soft, compressible ground: lagoon and swamp deposits through parts of the precinct, and numerous old farm dams whose backfill quality is unknown.
